Selwyn Senatori: A New Chapter for One of Amsterdam's Most Recognizable Artists

For nearly three decades, Dutch artist Selwyn Senatori has occupied a unique place in the contemporary art world. Known for his bold brushwork, iconic black lines, vibrant color palettes, and unmistakable depictions of luxury, nightlife, fashion, and popular culture, Senatori has built a career that bridges fine art and contemporary culture.

His work has attracted collectors worldwide and led to collaborations with renowned brands and public figures, including Paris Hilton, David Guetta, and Mariah Carey. Yet despite his success, Senatori continues to challenge himself artistically, embarking on a new phase that reflects a deeper and more personal perspective.

The Influence of a Remarkable Mother

Recently, Senatori experienced the loss of his mother, a woman he describes as "pure love and positivity" combined with an endless source of energy.
Reflecting on her influence, he explains that the rapid brushstrokes and instinctive responses visible throughout his work are rooted in her personality.

"My mother was pure love and positivity, but she was also a whirlwind of energy. The fast brushstrokes in my work and my immediate responses to everything society throws at me are very much a reflection of that energy."

Her spirit remains present in his paintings, which continue to capture movement, emotion, and spontaneity with remarkable intensity.

From Rock 'n' Roll to Reflection

Much of Senatori's earlier work was fueled by the energy of a fast-paced lifestyle. His paintings became visual snapshots of contemporary culture, filled with champagne, luxury hotels, designer brands, glamorous figures, and the rhythm of city life.
Today, as a father and family man, his outlook has evolved.

"Growing older and taking on more responsibilities brings new emotions, and those emotions inevitably find their way into the work. My art is becoming more layered, more thoughtful, and ultimately more meaningful."

While his signature style remains unmistakable, a new level of introspection is emerging beneath the surface. The themes remain contemporary, but the narrative is becoming richer and more personal.

Embracing the Unknown

One of the qualities that has defined Senatori throughout his career is his willingness to experiment.

While many artists become attached to the style that made them successful, Senatori actively seeks new challenges. Whether exploring different materials, incorporating sculptural elements, or revisiting the drawing techniques that formed the foundation of his career, he sees uncertainty as an opportunity rather than a risk.

"Diving into the unknown doesn't scare me at all. Quite the opposite. It gives me a sense of deep relaxation. When there are no expectations and no pressure, there is complete freedom."

This mindset has become increasingly important as he works toward a series of international art fairs and solo exhibitions that will showcase this next stage in his artistic development.

Witnessing Amsterdam's Artistic Transformation

Few artists have observed Amsterdam's art scene from the inside for as long as Senatori.

Having worked professionally for almost thirty years, he has witnessed the city's transformation from a relatively small and traditional art community into a global, digitally driven marketplace.

While he acknowledges the opportunities created by social media and modern marketing, he also reflects on a time when technical craftsmanship was central to artistic practice.

His own commitment to drawing, painting, and mastering materials remains deeply rooted in that tradition. A big show with new drawings and sculptures is planned to open mid-June in Amsterdam and more to follow in the USA later this year.
