Contemporary Dutch Design Glass
Glass occupies a unique place between art, design and craftsmanship. It captures light, changes throughout the day and transforms with every surrounding. At Amstel Gallery, we curate contemporary Dutch design glass that goes beyond decoration; objects that invite interaction, reward close observation and become lasting parts of an interior.
Our collection focuses on limited production pieces by Dutch glass artists whose work represents the innovation for which the Netherlands has become internationally known. Whether displayed as sculptural objects or used in everyday life, these works celebrate the remarkable possibilities of glass as a material.
Among the artists we represent are Carina Riezebos and Nienke Sikkema, two designers with very different artistic languages who share a fascination with pushing the boundaries of contemporary glass.
Carina Riezebos
Carina Riezebos has spent decades exploring the intersection of design, function and artistic expression. Trained as an industrial designer, she has become one of the Netherlands' leading voices in contemporary glass design and was the first female Head of Design at Royal Leerdam Crystal. Her work combines technical precision with sculptural elegance, resulting in objects that feel equally at home in museums, private collections and contemporary interiors.
Her collections challenge the traditional distinction between art objects and functional design. Bowls, vases and vessels become sculptural centrepieces while remaining fully usable. Every curve, colour and proportion reflects her belief that beautiful objects should enrich everyday life rather than remain behind glass.
At Amstel Gallery we carefully select works that represent this philosophy, offering collectible glass that combines timeless design with exceptional craftsmanship.
Nienke Sikkema
Where precision meets playfulness, the work of Nienke Sikkema embraces spontaneity. After studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, she refined her glassblowing practice at the renowned Dutch glass studio De Oude Horn under Bernard Heesen, developing an approach that allows the material itself to influence the final form.
Rather than forcing glass into predetermined shapes, Sikkema works with its natural movement while it remains molten. Glass drips, folds, stretches and balances into expressive forms that feel both playful and sophisticated. The result is a collection of contemporary glass objects that celebrate colour, transparency and the unpredictable beauty of the material itself.
Together with Amstel Gallery, Nienke has developed exclusive glass objects that reflect her distinctive visual language while remaining accessible for everyday living. These pieces blur the line between collectible design and functional sculpture, making them equally suited for collectors, architects and interior designers seeking extraordinary statement pieces.
Collectible Glass for Contemporary Interiors
Collectible design glass has become an increasingly important category within contemporary interiors. Designers and collectors appreciate the way glass introduces light, colour and transparency without overwhelming a space. Unlike traditional decorative objects, contemporary glass interacts continuously with its surroundings, changing as daylight moves through a room.
Whether displayed individually or grouped as a collection, these works create visual depth while reflecting the craftsmanship of some of the Netherlands' most respected glass artists.
At Amstel Gallery, every piece is selected for its artistic integrity, quality of execution and lasting design value. Our collection is intended for those who appreciate contemporary design, European craftsmanship and objects that tell a story through material, form and light.
We invite collectors, interior designers, architects and design enthusiasts to discover contemporary Dutch design glass by Carina Riezebos and Nienke Sikkema; works that bring together art, design and everyday living in a uniquely expressive way.
