September: From Amsterdam to Washington
September brings two special moments for artists connected to Amstel Gallery. Jaap Vliegenthart presents Light of Day at the Hungry Eye Fair in Amsterdam, while across the Atlantic, E. Brady Robinson opens Studio Hours / After Hours at Georgetown University Art Galleries in Washington, DC.
Two artists, two cities and two very different ways of looking at the world through photography.
Jaap Vliegenthart | Hungry Eye Fair, Amsterdam
This September, Jaap Vliegenthart’s Light of Day will be presented at the Hungry Eye Fair in Amsterdam.
The series is an ongoing exploration of light, color and the everyday. Vliegenthart has a remarkable eye for finding images in places and moments that could easily be overlooked, turning them into carefully composed photographs that move between observation and abstraction.
For the Hungry Eye Fair, Light of Day is joined by new works created during Vliegenthart’s recent residency in Paris. The change of surroundings has found its way into the work, bringing new layers, scale and perspective to a series that continues to evolve.
Seeing these newest works presented in Amsterdam feels particularly fitting. For those visiting the Hungry Eye Fair, it is an opportunity to see Light of Day together with its latest additions and to experience how the series has developed.
E. Brady Robinson | Studio Hours / After Hours, Washington, DC
In Washington, DC, E. Brady Robinson presents Studio Hours / After Hours at Georgetown University Art Galleries.
The exhibition draws from a decade of Robinson photographing Baltimore’s creative community, moving between the intimacy of the artist’s studio and the energy of the city’s clubs, galleries and performance spaces.
The exhibition brings together studio portraits, album-cover collaborations and photographs from Robinson’s archive documenting Baltimore Club culture. Among those photographed are Kotic Couture, filmmaker and musician TT The Artist, and Ballroom ICON Marquis Clanton of the House of Revlon.
It is a world Robinson knows well, and that familiarity comes through in the photographs. There is fashion, music, performance and nightlife, but ultimately the work is about people. Her portraits have an immediacy that never feels overly staged, even when the setting or personality in front of her camera is anything but quiet.
Robinson is also an Adjunct Professor in Georgetown University’s Department of Art and Art History, where she teaches the Senior Project Seminar, making Studio Hours / After Hours an especially meaningful presentation of her photographic practice.
The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, September 18, from 6–8 pm at Georgetown University Art Galleries.
From the changing light of Paris and Amsterdam to the creative communities of Baltimore and Washington, these September presentations could hardly be more different. Yet both begin with something we have always valued at Amstel Gallery: artists who know how to look, and who make us look again.
