Eugène Brands is often associated with CoBrA, but he only joined briefly. He departed shortly after the famous joint exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in late 1949. His unique perspective on art made him a solitary figure, despite being a talented painter and a well-liked individual. Brands was fascinated by indigenous cultures, particularly their music, and attempted to capture their mystical elements in his works. Throughout the 1950s, his art showed a noticeable influence from children's drawings, a signature trait of CoBrA. This was also influenced by the fact that his daughter, Eugenie, was a young child at the time. For years, he drew inspiration from this source and created stunning small paintings, mostly oil on paper. In the 1960s, Brands gradually shifted towards abstract art, abandoning representationalism. He began painting large expanses of color that were described by CoBrA historian Willemijn Stokvis as "an impenetrable cotton - wool like substance.
Eugène Brands continued creating until he was older, mainly focusing on gouaches on paper from 1993 onwards, as they were easier for him to create. He passed away on his 89th birthday, January 15, 2002.
